If you do much writing, you may have run into situation where you couldn't find a special character. Some programs like Word have built-in symbol menus; other programs have special key commands (if you can remember them). Windows XP operating system includes a custom application for managing special characters called Character Map. To access this program, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. This smart program gives you hundreds of characters to choose from, plus the keystroke to create the symbol. In addition, you have the option of selecting what font to display the character in.

For Vista users, go to Start -> All Programs -> System Tools -> Character Map.

For Mac OS X users, go to the Finder -> Edit -> Special Characters to start the Character Palette program.
